I use quite a bit of hair gel and other hair styling products in my hair that create buildup and sometimes make my head feel itchy. To control both the buildup and itchy feeling, I treat myself to an exfoliating scalp scrub and massage at least two times per month and it is one of my most favorite things to do. It relaxes me and I know it sounds weird, but there’s just something wonderful about itching the scalp. You know when you scratch a dog and it goes belly up into a trance with its eyes rolled back in its head? Well, this is exactly how I feel when I exfoliate my scalp.
Not only does exfoliating the scalp feel wonderful, there are also many benefits. Exfoliating helps to:
- Remove dead skin and dandruff
- Detox the scalp
- Dissolve dirt and bacteria
- Remove hair product build up
- Stimulate hair growth by increasing circulation to the scalp
- Relieve itchy and irritated scalp
There are many methods for efficiently exfoliating the scalp, such as adding an exfoliants to shampoo or conditioner, but my favorite way to exfoliate is to do it before I wash my hair with brown sugar, oil and a few hair stimulating essential oils. This recipe will leave your scalp feeling invigorated and refreshed. To make it, you will need:
3 Tbs brown sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1 ½ Tbs of olive oil
3 drops lavender essential oil
3 drops rosemary
3 drops mint essential oil
Mix oil, sugar and essential oils (optional). Part hair in sections and apply to scalp in each section until most of scalp is coated. Massage scalp for 1-2 minutes in a circular motion. Shampoo, condition and style as usual.
